# Stewardship close to home

Most land care is not a national argument. It is a fence line, a woodlot, a ditch, a hunt club, a county planning hearing, a church clean-up on a creek. The American tradition runs through those ordinary acts as much as through statutes. A heritage desk that only talks about Washington has already missed the subject.

**No invented scoreboard.** We will not publish a homemade count of easements, tree-plantings, or “acres saved.” Those figures, when they exist, belong to the land trust, the county, or the agency that recorded them.

## Tools that stay local

- **Private practice.** Crop rotation, rest-rotation grazing, selective harvest, and keeping a riparian strip.
- **Conservation easements.** A recorded limit on subdivision or conversion, held by a land trust or a public agency, while title stays private.
- **Civic habit.** Hunting and angling license systems, volunteer fire, irrigation districts, and soil-and-water conservation districts.
